Eco-Finland

The Finnish were certainly not a nation to wait around for the official government go-ahead and other global initiatives to protect the environment. Cycling, sorting household waste, reducing packaging, saving electricity, water and paper, even in the land of forests! Eco-responsibility is for the home as well as the workplace.

According to a survey carried out by Greenpeace in 2009, renowned mobile phone giant Nokia leads the field in terms of eco-responsible companies. It has set itself the task of collecting used mobile phones in 84 countries, with around 5,000 collection points worldwide. In Helsinki, IT company Academica has built a 5,000m2 complex with the aim of conducting and recycling heat from its data centre. With its high-performance cooling system, excess heat from the servers is redirected to provide heat and warm water for thousands of apartments. And it doesn’t stop with technology…

Family company Honka is the world’s leading manufacturer of not only homes and log frame timber chalets, but also hotels, nurseries and schools. The company’s reputation is founded on 50 years’ experience and 60% of its production is exported from its manufacturing facilities in Finland to 30 countries across the globe, including Germany, Japan and France. Managing forests and energy is a shining example of ecology in action.
