Japan: The subtle art of discretion
Tokyo, Manga town. Japan, land of sushi, both modern and traditional in equal measure. Certain clichés ring true, and some have it hard, but not as hard as the images of the tidal wave that devastated this serene group of islands on March 11th 2011. But that was already a long time ago. For in the country of the rising sun, the natural strength of an entire population asserted its right and without further ado, just a few days after the earthquake, life clicked in and the airplanes rushed first to Tokyo’s aid, and then to the rest of the country.
Japan still survives on little sleep and the cities are lively. You can go out amid the neon glare of night restaurants or savour the daytime without excessive extravagance. Champagne is a luxury, but not out of reach. For a party or for Sunday lunch, in a restaurant or for pre-dinner drinks, as the traditional end-of-year gift and a definite sign that happy times in Japan are also experienced through wine. Cooking, culture and pleasure…the perfect recipe for the epicureans among us to savour.
