Shanghai: the pearl of the Orient
Right in the middle of the Chinese coastline, on the east coast, lies Shanghai. This pearl of the orient is a city that never sleeps, and yet lives a dreamlike existence. A city in the sea, it has quite admirably turned a new leaf and is now finding its place as a financial and cosmopolitan powerhouse, reaching higher and higher towards the sky.
Meteoric double-figure growth, urban force and cultural growth more than justify its metropolis status, in the same mould as London or New York. Its underground rail network, resulting from the metamorphosis that has taken place in the district of Pudong, with public gardens, opera and immense towers already taking shape, is among the longest in the world. Like the Olympic games in Peking, the 2010 Universal Exhibition, attracting 73 million visitors, has breathed new life in to Shanghai, and to China as a whole.
